New Jersey cost guide
Most homeowners pay $392 to $768 to have a whole-house humidifier installed, $580 on average (Angi, 2026). Homewyse's calculator puts a basic furnace-mounted install at $1,106 to $1,328 for ZIP 07201 in Elizabeth; a steam unit runs $1,200 to $2,500 installed (Carrier).

These are published market figures, not LA Trusted prices. The NJ lines come from Homewyse's cost calculator set to ZIP 07201 (Elizabeth), the four utilities' own rebate pages and New Jersey's construction code. "No NJ figure confirmed" means we did not find a New Jersey figure for that line that we could open at its source; the US figure beside it is national. Every figure was read on October 26, 2026 and is named to its source in the tables below.
Last updated October 26, 2026. LA Trusted Partners routes HVAC requests to independent providers after your consent — it does not sell or install humidifiers, it does not dispatch technicians, and it does not set, quote or guarantee any provider's pricing, availability, response time or workmanship. Every price below comes from a cited published source, with the date it shows or the date we read it. Health guidance comes only from the EPA and university extension services, permit rules only from New Jersey's code, and rebate answers only from the utilities' own pages.
For most homes, between about $400 and $1,300 for an evaporative unit, and more for steam. Angi (updated October 16, 2026) puts the national average at $580 from 895 projects by its pros, with most paying $392 to $768, as little as $175 for a small budget model and up to $1,350 for a high-end furnace-mounted unit.
The one published figure we could set to a New Jersey ZIP code is Homewyse's calculator. Set to 07201, Elizabeth, it prices one plenum-mounted humidifier with basic labor and supplies at $1,106 to $1,328, against $927 to $1,111 at the national average (May 2026 data). Its labor line is the difference: 5.7 hours at $850 to $1,030 near Elizabeth.
The two manufacturers ranking for this search give wider installed ranges: Carrier says $500 to $2,500 depending on the model type, and Bryant says $400 to $1,200. Jolly, an Ohio and Kentucky contractor, published $400 to $1,850 in December 2024.

Type and labor. A bypass unit on an open basement plenum next to a cold water pipe and a floor drain is a short job. A steam unit that needs its own circuit, or a furnace in a tight closet or attic, is a long one: Carrier and Bryant both name access, the water and drain runs and electrical work as what moves the labor. Jolly puts bypass and fan-powered installs at 2 to 3 hours and steam at 4 to 6.
Carrier says installing a humidifier at the same time as a new furnace or heat pump may simplify the job, and lists bundling it with a furnace replacement or a maintenance visit as a way to save. The furnace and boiler cost guide covers the repair-or-replace question.
There are three kinds, and the type drives the price more than the brand. Plumbline Services lists them from least to most expensive: bypass, fan-powered, steam. It says some fan-powered models add up to a gallon more moisture a day than bypass units, and that steam units need professional installation and a dedicated 220V circuit.
| Type | How it works | Price published | Yearly energy (Angi) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bypass (evaporative) | The furnace blower pushes warm air through a wet water panel; a short bypass duct links the supply and return ducts. | Carrier: $400 – $800 installed. Angi, evaporative unit only: drum $100 – $300, flow-through $200 – $600. | Evaporative: drum $1 – $3; flow-through $9 – $28 |
| Fan-powered (evaporative) | Same water panel, with its own fan pulling air through it, so no bypass duct. | No installed figure published by Carrier or Bryant; Bryant says it is generally priced above bypass models. | Evaporative: drum $1 – $3; flow-through $9 – $28 |
| Steam | Heats water into steam with its own element, so it can run when the furnace is not heating. | Carrier: $1,200 – $2,500 installed. Angi, unit only: $300 – $1,100. Jolly: $500 – $2,200. | $150 – $500 |
Carrier (read October 26, 2026), Angi (updated October 16, 2026), Jolly (December 1, 2024) and Bryant (read October 26, 2026). Angi's unit prices are before installation. Angi splits evaporative units into drum and flow-through, which can each be bypass or fan-powered.
Homewyse breaks its Elizabeth estimate into lines you can hold a quote against. Its basic job is a plenum-mounted unit on the return duct, tapped into a water line that is already close by, with the controller surface-mounted.
| Line on the bill | Elizabeth, NJ (ZIP 07201) | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| The humidifier | $228 – $266 | A plenum-mounted unit, 0.7 gallon an hour, for up to 4,000 sq ft, with a digital humidity controller and a 120V connection |
| Labor, basic | 5.7 hours, $850 – $1,030 | Cutting the mounting opening in the return plenum, mounting, tapping the nearby water supply, control wiring, power and test |
| Job supplies | $28 – $32 | Fittings, fasteners and mounting hardware |
| Total, basic install | $1,106 – $1,328 | The three lines above |
| Option: remove an old unit | 1.1 hours, $166 – $201 | Disconnect and haul away an existing unit |
| Option: debris disposal | $88 – $100 | Load, haul and dispose of old materials and waste |

Bryant's description of a standard installation: assess the system for the best location, mount the unit on the supply or return duct, run the water line, drain line and electrical wiring, and set up the humidistat. Each of those is a line of labor, which is why a furnace far from a water pipe or a drain costs more to fit.
The EPA says minerals in tap water build up as scale in humidifiers. If your water is hard, ask how often your model's panel or steam canister will need replacing. The water softener guide shows the hardness in the New Jersey American Water systems around Elizabeth.
Usually, if the house has forced-air ducts. Carrier says retrofitting is straightforward when the existing ductwork is compatible, and that older systems may need changes to electrical components or ducts, which adds labor. AprilAire lists its Model 600 as made for ducted HVAC systems.
A house heated by a boiler and radiators or baseboard has no supply or return duct for these units to mount on. If that is your house, ask an HVAC contractor what humidification fits a system without ducts before you compare prices: the figures on this page are for duct-mounted units.
A bypass unit needs a bypass duct between the supply and return, and space for it. A steam unit needs power: Plumbline says a dedicated 220V circuit and outlet at the humidifier. Ask for both to be priced in, not added after.
Cold outdoor air holds little moisture, and heating it makes it drier. Virginia Cooperative Extension puts it this way: during the heating season, warm indoor air holds more moisture than cold outdoor air. The colder it is outside, the drier the house runs once the furnace has warmed that air.
New Jersey's winter does that every year. The Office of the New Jersey State Climatologist's 1991–2020 normals put the normal January low at 25.5°F at Newark Liberty and 21.9°F at Canoe Brook.
The EPA says the moisture humidifiers add helps with the nuisances of winter heating: static electricity, peeling wallpaper, and cracks in paint and furniture. That is the season these units are bought in, and the reason to price one before it starts: Carrier suggests scheduling the work in spring or fall, when HVAC contractors are less busy, and Angi says off-season labor prices are lower.
| Weather station | Normal January low (1991–2020) |
|---|---|
| Newark Liberty International Airport | 25.5°F |
| Canoe Brook (Essex/Union line) | 21.9°F |

A hygrometer costs $10 to $70 (Angi) and tells you whether the house actually runs dry. The University of Minnesota Extension calls 25% relative humidity in winter to 50% in summer healthy and comfortable for people and better for the house. Virginia Cooperative Extension says to keep cold-climate homes no higher than 35 to 40 percent in winter, and below 35 percent when it is 20°F or colder outside.
Humidifiers are rated in gallons of water a day. AprilAire's answers give a simple guide for its evaporative models, so a 2,000 sq ft house falls in the 600 and 700 range. Its Model 600 listing says its ratings follow AHRI Guideline F and that a tighter house can go larger, up to 5,000 sq ft on that unit.
Bryant says a unit that is too small won't keep up and one that is too large adds cost, and that the dealer should size it to the house. Plumbline adds 2 to 4 gallons a day for a poorly insulated house, and gives four checks: if two or more are yes, size up.
| AprilAire model (evaporative) | Up to about | Usually good for |
|---|---|---|
| Model 500 (small bypass) | 11 gallons a day | Homes up to 1,500 sq ft |
| Model 600 (large bypass) or 700 (fan-powered) | 16 – 17 gallons a day | Homes up to 3,000 sq ft |
Too much moisture is the main one. The EPA's humidifier fact sheet says not to humidify above 50 percent relative humidity, because higher levels may encourage dust mites and molds, and that if water condenses on windows, walls or pictures you should lower the humidistat setting or use it less. The University of Minnesota Extension says moisture problems may occur above 50%.
Upkeep is the second. The EPA says to follow the maker's directions for central, furnace-mounted humidifiers and not to let water stand in a tank. AprilAire says its standard water panels should be replaced once per heating season, and Angi puts a yearly maintenance visit at $75 to $200.
Running cost is the third, mostly for steam. Angi's yearly energy figures are $1 to $3 for a drum unit, $9 to $28 for flow-through and $150 to $500 for steam.
The EPA says humidifiers are used to relieve dry nose, throat, lips and skin, and that dust mites and molds, which grow with excess moisture, cause allergic reactions. Its advice: stop using your humidifier and contact your physician if you have respiratory symptoms you believe are associated with it. This page is not medical advice, and LA Trusted makes no health claim for any humidifier.

Ask your town's construction office before work starts. New Jersey's ordinary-maintenance rule, N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7, lists the work that needs no permit, and a humidifier is not on that list. The same rule says that adding to or altering water supply, drainage or similar piping, and most electrical wiring, is not ordinary maintenance. A humidifier install taps a water line and runs a drain and control wiring, so the construction office decides what it wants filed.
The license question is separate. The State Board of Examiners of HVACR Contractors says it requires all heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration contractors to be licensed by the State and to renew every two years. Look the installer up in the NJ license and registration lookup, with the steps in how to check a contractor in New Jersey.
N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7(b) says ordinary maintenance shall not include the "addition to, or alteration, replacement or relocation of" water supply, sewer, drainage, gas, soil, waste, vent or similar piping, or electrical wiring outside the exceptions it lists. Its HVAC list covers repairs and replacements, such as control devices and duct repairs; it does not name a humidifier.

We found none. On October 26, 2026 we read PSE&G's heating and cooling offers, Elizabethtown Gas's HVAC and water heating rebates, JCP&L's HVAC equipment rebates and NJNG's furnace and boiler rebates. None lists a humidifier. Carrier's own tip is to check for utility rebates on HVAC accessories, so ask your utility if your plan differs.
Those programs pay toward high-efficiency furnaces, boilers and heat pumps. If the humidifier goes in with new equipment, the New Jersey HVAC rebate guide lays out what each utility pays.
Two humidifier quotes can differ by the unit, the water and drain runs, the controls and the warranty. Put each line against the published line items and the price by type.

A humidifier install goes in as an HVAC request. LA Trusted does not guarantee a humidifier installer in every town, and your contact information is shared with a matched independent provider only after you agree to the disclosure.
The sizing, the price, any filing with your town, the warranty and the customer terms come from the independent provider. LA Trusted's standards ask that a provider's business identity and service area be checkable, and that licensing where applicable, insurance evidence and complaint history be checked before routing.
Send an HVAC request and say it is for a whole-house humidifier: the town, what heats the house (a furnace with ducts, or a boiler), the square footage if you know it, and whether you want it priced with other furnace work. If an HVAC provider in our network takes humidifier jobs in your town, that provider calls you back.
Coverage depends on the town and the job, and a request is not a guarantee that a provider is available. LA Trusted does not do the work itself and does not promise a response time, so the quote and any warranty come from the provider who calls you.
No heat right now? The furnace repair page has its own request. Already have a quote? Check it against the published line items.
Check the furnace the humidifier will hang on, the rebates for new heating equipment, or the hardness of your water.
Angi's 2026 national average is $580, with most homeowners paying $392 to $768 (updated October 16, 2026). Homewyse's calculator puts a basic plenum-mounted install at $1,106 to $1,328 for ZIP 07201 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, against $927 to $1,111 nationally (May 2026 data). Carrier gives $400 to $800 installed for a bypass unit and $1,200 to $2,500 for steam. These are published market figures, not LA Trusted prices.
The unit alone runs $100 to $300 for a drum model, $200 to $600 for flow-through and $300 to $1,100 for steam, per Angi's 2026 page. Installed, Carrier puts a whole-house humidifier at $500 to $2,500 and Bryant at $400 to $1,200. A humidistat, if one is not included, adds $30 to $150 (Angi).
A furnace humidifier is the same thing as a whole-house humidifier: it mounts on the furnace's supply or return duct. Homewyse prices the labor for a basic one near Elizabeth at 5.7 hours, $850 to $1,030, on top of a $228 to $266 unit. Angi puts installation labor at $100 to $1,000 nationally, with HVAC pros charging $50 to $150 an hour.
Usually, if the house has forced-air ducts. Carrier says retrofitting is straightforward when the existing ductwork is compatible, though older systems may need electrical or duct changes. Bryant describes the job as mounting the unit on the supply or return duct and running water, drain and electrical lines. A house heated by a boiler and radiators has no ducts for these units to mount on, so ask an HVAC contractor what fits that system.
On AprilAire's ratings, a 2,000 sq ft home is past its Model 500 (about 11 gallons a day, usually good up to 1,500 sq ft) and inside the range of its Model 600 and 700 (16 to 17 gallons a day, up to 3,000 sq ft). Plumbline says to add 2 to 4 gallons a day if the house is poorly insulated. Your installer should size it for your house.
Too much moisture. The EPA says not to humidify above 50 percent relative humidity, because higher levels may encourage dust mites and mold, and to lower the setting if water condenses on windows, walls or pictures. There is upkeep: AprilAire says its standard water panels should be replaced once per heating season. A steam unit uses the most power, $150 to $500 a year by Angi's figures.
The EPA says humidifiers are used to relieve dry nose, throat, lips and skin, but that excess moisture can encourage dust mites and molds, which cause allergic reactions to household dust. Its advice is to keep indoor humidity at or below 50 percent and to stop using a humidifier and contact your physician if you have respiratory symptoms you believe are tied to it. This page is not medical advice.
Follow the maker's directions, which is the EPA's advice for central, furnace-mounted humidifiers, and do not let water stand in a tank. AprilAire says its Water Panels 10, 12 and 35 should be replaced once per heating season and its Water Panel 45 twice. Angi puts replacement pads at $10 to $50 a year and an annual maintenance visit at $75 to $200.
It depends on how dry your house reads. Carrier says the return on investment is difficult to calculate as a fixed dollar amount, because energy savings depend on the home. A hygrometer, which Angi prices at $10 to $70, tells you whether the house actually runs dry before you spend $400 or more. The University of Minnesota Extension calls 25% humidity in winter to 50% in summer healthy and comfortable.
Angi's 2026 yearly energy figures: $1 to $3 for a drum unit, $9 to $28 for flow-through and $150 to $500 for steam. Bryant says bypass and fan-powered units mainly use the furnace's existing airflow, while steam units heat water and use more electricity.
Ask your town. New Jersey's ordinary-maintenance rule, N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7, lists work that needs no permit, and a humidifier is not on that list. The same rule says adding or altering water supply or drainage piping, and most electrical wiring, is not ordinary maintenance, and a humidifier install taps a water line and runs a drain and wiring. Your construction office decides what it wants filed.
We found none. PSE&G's heating and cooling offers, Elizabethtown Gas's HVAC rebates, JCP&L's HVAC rebates and NJNG's furnace and boiler rebates, all read October 26, 2026, list no humidifier. Those programs pay toward high-efficiency heating and cooling equipment, which the HVAC rebate guide on this site covers.
Angi recommends a professional unless you have real experience with electrical, plumbing and HVAC work, and Plumbline warns that a sloppy install can damage the HVAC system or void its warranty. If you hire it out in New Jersey, the State Board of Examiners of HVACR Contractors requires HVACR contractors to be licensed, so check the license on the State lookup.
