PSE&G WorryFree Explained: What the Heating Plans Cost, What They Cover, and When to Get a Second Quote

WorryFree heating plans cost $12.50 a month for a gas furnace or steam boiler, $19.71 for a premier gas hot-water boiler, and $23.32 for a heat pump or ductless system, according to PSE&G's WorryFree site on September 23, 2026. That is $150 to $279.84 a year. This page lays out what the plans cover, what the terms leave out, how a WorryFree replacement is financed, and what to compare before you sign for a new furnace or boiler.

LA Trusted does not perform HVAC work; it routes second-quote and repair requests to an independent licensed HVACR provider after your consent.

What PSE&G WorryFree Is, and What It Is Not

PSE&G WorryFree is PSE&G's appliance service business. It sells monthly protection plans for heating systems, water heaters, and gas piping, and it sells and installs replacement equipment. The plan agreement is with PSE&G itself, and the plan terms say all work is done by PSE&G service technicians. It is sold separately from your utility service: WorryFree's pages say the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities has not approved the prices offered, and that customers are not required to buy WorryFree to keep receiving safe, adequate, and proper utility service or to take part in utility energy efficiency programs. A 2022 audit posted by the Board describes it as a competitive service run by a business unit inside PSE&G.

WorryFree does two separate things that are easy to blur together. The protection plans cover repairs for a monthly fee. The replacement and installation side sells new furnaces, boilers, and other equipment. A plan technician who says the system should be replaced is often the start of a WorryFree replacement quote, which is the moment a second quote is worth the most.

It is also not the same thing as PSE&G's rebates. The HVAC Instant Rebates Program is a separate PSE&G energy efficiency program, covered in the New Jersey HVAC rebate guide.

Three things people confuse

  • A WorryFree plan is a monthly repair and protection plan. It is not homeowners insurance and not a manufacturer's warranty.
  • A WorryFree replacement is a sale of new equipment by PSE&G WorryFree, with its own financing.
  • A PSE&G rebate is money off qualifying high-efficiency equipment installed by a participating contractor, with separate 0% on-bill repayment.

Other WorryFree plans include exposed indoor gas piping at $3.91 a month and a standard water heater at $4.55, and bundles of three or more plans are 10% off.

What the Plan Terms Leave Out

Most complaints about any repair plan come from the gap between what people assume is covered and what the terms say. These are the points in the WorryFree terms and conditions that matter most for a heating system. Read the terms for your specific plan before you enroll. The booklet has no numbered sections, so the references below are to its section headings and printed page numbers in the version PSE&G published as of September 23, 2026.

  • Nothing is covered for the first 15 days. Coverage starts 15 days after PSE&G processes the order, and parts ordered or installed during that waiting period are not covered (General Conditions, p. 2).
  • Preexisting problems are excluded. The equipment must be in good working order on the day coverage starts, and PSE&G may inspect it before accepting it (Limitations, p. 3).
  • PSE&G can decline an uneconomic repair. If a repair is not reasonably practical given the appliance's age and condition, PSE&G can refuse it, cancel coverage on that appliance, and refund up to 12 months of payments (Limitations, p. 4).
  • Big-ticket parts are carved out. The heating plan excludes heat exchangers, boiler leaks, cracks or ruptures, and vent pipes; the heat pump plan excludes compressors and coils (pp. 12 and 19).
  • No priority service or maintenance. The plans do not include priority service, a promised arrival time, annual inspections, or routine maintenance such as filter changes, and repairs caused by a lack of maintenance are excluded (Welcome page; General Exclusions, pp. 6–7).
  • The fall start-up is not included. The general exclusions list gas central heating turn-on from Labor Day through October 31 (General Exclusions, pp. 6–7).
  • Only PSE&G technicians. Repairs by anyone else are not reimbursed, and PSE&G says participation may void existing manufacturers' warranties (Limitations, p. 5).

Is WorryFree Worth It? A Way to Decide, Not a Verdict

A heating plan is a bet on how often your system breaks and what the repairs cost. At $150 to $279.84 a year, a single mid-size repair on an older system can cost more than a year of the plan, and some years pass with no repair at all. For published New Jersey repair prices to set against the plan's yearly cost, see the furnace and boiler repair cost guide.

It leans toward a plan when

  • The furnace or boiler is past its manufacturer's parts warranty and you would rather pay a fixed amount each month than a repair bill in January.
  • You would otherwise pay for diagnostic visits. PSE&G says there is no fee for a technician to come out and repair a covered appliance, and no deductible on covered parts or labor.
  • You want one number to call for the gas appliances in the house and are comfortable with the plan's list of what is and is not covered.

It leans against a plan when

  • The system is new and still under the manufacturer's parts warranty and the installer's labor warranty, which overlap much of what a plan pays for. PSE&G's terms also say participation may void existing manufacturers' warranties.
  • You expect to replace the system in the next year or two. The plans exclude installation of new or replacement equipment, and the minimum term is 12 months.
  • You already have a maintenance agreement with an independent HVAC contractor that includes priority service.
  • The parts your system tends to need fall on the plan's exclusion list. Read the terms for your plan before you enroll.

Holding a WorryFree Replacement Quote

A WorryFree replacement starts with a free in-home estimate. PSE&G says estimates cannot be given over the phone and the installation is not done on the same day as the estimate. The estimate covers materials, labor, disposal of the old unit, and any necessary permits. Payment can be spread over up to 72 months on the PSE&G bill with no money down, subject to credit approval, and the WorryFree FAQ says qualified customers get 0% interest. The heating brands listed are Weil-McLain and Rheem. WorryFree's own disclaimer says the Board of Public Utilities has not approved the rates offered and that other providers are available.

Ask whether the PSE&G instant rebate is on the quote. PSE&G WorryFree appears in PSE&G's finder of participating HVAC Instant Rebates contractors, and WorryFree's furnace and boiler page says only that rebates may be available for high-efficiency heating systems. No PSE&G page we found says the rebate is applied to a WorryFree installation automatically, and the gas rebates require a condensing unit replacing a non-condensing one, so ask for the rebate as its own line.

The comparison that matters is the net monthly cost for the same equipment. A participating contractor under PSE&G's HVAC Instant Rebates Program takes the rebate off the invoice and can arrange 0% on-bill repayment of up to $25,000 over 84 months; PSE&G says it does not run a credit check for that repayment. Put both quotes side by side with the checklist below.

Read the replacement quote for

  • The model numbers and AFUE of the new unit.
  • Whether a utility rebate is shown, and which one.
  • The financing rate, term, and total repaid.
  • What is included: permit, removal, venting, thermostat.

Second-Quote Checklist for a New Furnace or Boiler

Whoever writes the first quote, these are the eight things to line up before the second one comes in. The permit rule is N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.17A, and the license check is the State license lookup.

  • Same equipment on both quotes: brand, model numbers, AFUE efficiency, and heating capacity in BTUs. A lower price on a smaller or less efficient unit is not a lower price.
  • The utility rebate as its own line. A 95% AFUE gas furnace replacing a non-condensing one earns $540 from PSE&G, and $900 from Elizabethtown Gas or New Jersey Natural Gas. If the line is missing, ask why.
  • The financing in writing: the interest rate, the term, and the monthly payment. Compare it with the 0% on-bill repayment a participating contractor can arrange through your utility.
  • How the size was chosen. Elizabethtown Gas's rebate requires equipment selected by Manual S from a Manual J load calculation; ask for the calculation rather than a copy of the old unit's size.
  • Who pulls the permit. Under N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.17A a like-for-like furnace or boiler replacement is minor work with a permit filed within five business days and an inspection.
  • The contractor's New Jersey HVACR license number on the quote, checked on the State lookup before you sign.
  • The warranty in writing: parts, labor, how long, and who honors it.
  • What is included: removal of the old unit, venting changes, the condensate drain, the thermostat, and any gas piping work.

Get a Second Quote From an Independent Licensed NJ HVACR Contractor

Tell us the town, what heats the house now, and what you were quoted. An independent licensed HVACR provider calls you back to look at the same job. If the system may still be repairable, say so; a second opinion on the repair is a fair ask too.

Coverage depends on the town. LA Trusted does not do the work itself and does not promise a response time or a lower price; the provider who calls you owns the quote.

LA Trusted Partners is a referral network, not the contractor. Our independent providers pay us for marketing and software services, and you're always free to choose whether to hire them. It is not affiliated with PSE&G, Elizabethtown Gas, New Jersey Natural Gas, or JCP&L. Ask the contractor to confirm in writing that they participate in your utility's rebate program before you sign.

PSE&G WorryFree: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does PSE&G WorryFree cost per month?

On PSE&G's WorryFree heating plans page on September 23, 2026, the Gas Furnace / Steam Boiler plan was $12.50 a month, the Premier Gas Hot Water Boiler plan $19.71, and the Standard Heat Pump and Ductless plans $23.32 each. Over a year that is $150.00, $236.52, and $279.84. Prices are set by PSE&G WorryFree and can change; the enrollment page shows the current figure.

What does PSE&G WorryFree cover?

PSE&G says the heating plans carry no service-call fee and no charge for covered parts or labor. The Gas Furnace / Steam Boiler plan covers gas furnaces and boilers under 400,000 BTU input, the Premier plan covers gas hot-water boilers with up to 56 parts and services, and the Standard Heat Pump plan covers electric heat pumps of five tons or less. The terms exclude preexisting problems, routine maintenance, installation of new or replacement equipment, and parts such as heat exchangers, vent pipes, and, on heat pumps, compressors and coils.

Is PSE&G WorryFree worth it?

It depends on the age of the system and what you already have. A heating plan costs $150 to $279.84 a year. It tends to earn its keep on an older furnace or boiler that is out of the manufacturer's warranty, when you would rather budget a fixed monthly amount. It tends not to on a new system still under warranty, on a system you plan to replace soon, or when you already have a maintenance agreement with a contractor. Read the plan terms for what is excluded before deciding.

Can I cancel PSE&G WorryFree?

Yes. PSE&G's terms say you can cancel at any time by calling 1-800-350-7734 (one WorryFree FAQ answer lists 1-800-249-1948). Cancel within the first 30 days of sign-up or renewal, with no service provided, and you get a full refund. After 30 days you can ask for a pro-rata refund, but if a repair was made you are billed the rest of the 12-month plan price, and coverage may not be reinstated for up to a year. The minimum term is 12 months, and plans renew unless you tell PSE&G otherwise.

Will PSE&G replace my furnace or boiler?

PSE&G WorryFree sells and installs replacement furnaces and boilers. It gives a free in-home estimate, not over the phone, that covers materials, labor, disposal of the old unit, and any necessary permits, and it offers payment over up to 72 months on the PSE&G bill, subject to credit approval; its FAQ says qualified customers can get 0% interest. Replacement is separate from the protection plans, which exclude installation of new or replacement equipment.

Is there a waiting period on a new WorryFree plan?

Yes. PSE&G says coverage is effective 15 days after it receives and processes your order, and the terms say parts ordered or installed during the waiting period are not covered. A plan bought after a breakdown does not pay for that breakdown.

Is WorryFree the same as PSE&G's HVAC rebate program?

No. WorryFree is a monthly repair and protection plan, and it also sells replacement equipment. The HVAC Instant Rebates Program is a separate PSE&G energy efficiency program that takes $540 off a 95% AFUE gas furnace replacing a non-condensing one, and more on some boilers, when a participating contractor installs qualifying equipment, with 0% on-bill repayment up to $25,000 over 84 months. PSE&G WorryFree is itself listed among the participating contractors.
